Dave Matthews joins Dinosaur Jr to cover Neil Young in Seattle
On January 17th, famed alternative rock outfit Dinosaur Jr invited Dave Matthews on-stage to perform a unique cover of Neil Young’s ‘Cortez the Killer’.
While the distinctly mellow rock of Matthews and Young might make them an unlikely collaboration for noise rock pioneers Dinosaur Jr, the cover worked surprisingly well. In a video recorded at the concert, which occurred at Seattle’s Neptune Theatre, the Dave Matthews Band leader enters the stage to thunderous applause.
The band had a few more tricks in store for the city that birthed grunge, bringing out Mudhoney’s Mark Arm to cover ‘Real Cool Time’ and ‘T.V. Eye’ by proto-punk icons The Stooges.
Rounding off this star-studded grunge celebration, Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden acted as a stand-in drummer for the performance of classic Dinosaur Jr track ‘Yeah We Know’.
These impromptu supergroups are something the band like to do occasionally; back in November last year they recruited My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields to perform a cover of ‘Just Like Heaven’ by The Cure at their London show. That same gig saw an unlikely collaboration between Dinosaur Jr and film director Richard Ayoade, who joined the band to play guitar on the track ‘Lung’.
Having risen to fame among the noise rock scene of the mid-1980s, Dinosaur Jr still capture the imagination of music fans across the world. With a performance at Bearded Theory Festival booked in for the summer, it will not be long before the alt-rockers return to the UK.
