Dave Grohl sheds a tear as Weezer cover Nirvana’s ‘Lithium’
Last night saw Weezer take on a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Lithium’ at the Rock in Rio this weekend. It was a song that is naturally close to Dave Grohl’s heart and the Foo Fighters singer admitted that he cried “a little bit” when he heard the song.
Grohl shared his emotions last night as his band the Foo Fighters’ took on their own headline performance at the Brazilian festival held in Rio de Janeiro. “I was backstage and I heard Weezer play the ‘Lithium’ song and I’ve got to be honest, I cried a little bit. I miss playing that song. So this song goes out to Weezer,” Grohl told the crowd.
Rivers Cuomo and his band performed the song as part of their set just before Grohl and the Foo Fighters came on. They performed the classic Nirvana track, taken from the legendary Nevermind, with aplomb.
“We’re going to cover a song from Dave Grohl’s old band,” Rivers Cuomo told the Rock in Rio audience before playing the cover of ‘Lithium’. Watch some fan footage below of Weezer’s epic Nirvana cover.
