Watch Dave Grohl join Boygenius on stage at Hollywood Bowl

Putting on a huge spooky celebration at Hollywood Bowl on Halloween night, Boygenius surprised crowds as Dave Grohl took to the drums.

The former Nirvana drummer, Foo Fighters frontman, and all-around nice guy of music joined the band on stage for ‘Satanist’ off Boygenius’ 2023 debut album, The Record

While the band were dressed up as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as part of their costume party, you could say that God took the form of Grohl when the drumming legend took his place behind the kit. Fans went wild, taking to social media to share clips of the performance.

This isn’t the first time Dave Grohl has interacted with the band; the musician has been a vocal fan of Phoebe Bridgers for years. In 2021, Grohl defended Bridgers from a social media storm after she smashed a guitar on SNL, noting that Kurt Cobain smashed his guitar up “every fucking night” and claiming that when people ask him, “Is rock and roll dead?” Phoebe Bridgers is proof that it isn’t.

Even Grohl’s mother was a fan, telling Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show that she asked him about the SNL performance: “She goes, ‘What did you think of that girl Phoebe?’ I said, ‘She’s got a beautiful voice; she can really sing’. And my mother’s like, ‘I loved it. I thought she was really great.’”

Grohl’s appearance was one of many surprises at their Halloween show in Los Angeles. The band, made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, delighted fans with an extended 25-song set list that included covers of each other’s songs.

Lucy Dacus took the lead on a cover of Julien Baker’s ‘Good News’, Baker took over Phoebe Bridgers’ ‘Motion Sickness’, and Bridgers sang the Lucy Dacus song ‘Night Shift’. Another testament to the power of the supergroup, the three artists consistently weave their solo achievements while still feeling like a unified band.

After spending almost the entirety of 2023 touring, their Hollywood Bowl Halloween show was their last for a while.
