Danny Glover reveals secret Alzheimer’s battle: “I don’t feel like it’s the end of my life”
Lethal Weapon actor Danny Glover has revealed that he’s secretly been living with Alzheimer’s.
Glover, who turns 80 later this month, has been out of the public eye in recent years, with his last film role coming in 2023.
Now, in an interview with Today, Glover revealed the news of his diagnosis which has kept him away from acting, revealing of the condition, “I could live with it, in a sense,” but did accept that in the future “things are going to be different and changing.”
Additionally, Glover has spoken to People about his battle with Alzheimer’s, revealing that he received the life-changing news in 2023.
He admitted, “In some sense acknowledging that it’s happening to you and at the same time that there are millions of people suffering from it.”
However, Glover did concede, “I’m still not accepting in my mind all parts of it”. The actor added, “There are the moments that you keep remembering that validate the fact that you can remember stuff. And there are moments I’ll never forget.”
Furthermore, his daughter, Mandisa, also spoke to the publication, sharing of her father’s condition, “I think he’s aware sometimes and then sometimes not.”
Due to Glover’s immense memory prior to his diagnosis, Mandisa began to worry about him, saying of his former self, “The history of my dad is that he remembers every single thing back to 1970, what corner he was standing on, who he spoke to, what they spoke about, what colour they were wearing, everything,” but suddenly “there would be pieces of the story missing.”
Per the NHS, Alzheimer’s is “a progressive condition, which means the symptoms develop gradually over many years and eventually become more severe,” which affects multiple brain functions.
In addition to causing memory loss, it can also lead to problems with speech, movement, as well as behavioural changes, and even hallucinations.
