Daniel Johnston recordings from 1980s and 1990s made available digitally

After years of being off any sort of streaming services, the work of indie rock legend Daniel Johnston is finally making its way into the digital age.

Best known for his homemade recordings commonly available on cassette, Johnston was known for making music that was defined by his various struggles with mental health. Due to his unconventional way of marketing his songs independently, Daniel Johnston in the 20th Century, sets out to archive the singer’s 14 studio albums from the 1980s and 1990s.

Without a formal marketing scheme, Johnston was known for delivering his cassettes to potential fans by hand, often asking to borrow one of them back when he ran out of cassettes. After transferring the few surviving tapes onto Shimmy-Disc, the first half of Johnston’s body of work is seeing its first mainstream release on Bandcamp.

Remastered by producer Kramer, much of the material has been remastered from those original cassettes, leading to the songs given a massive boost in sonic fidelity. Without any assistance from AI, the producer has updated the material from the initial cassette quality into 24-bit lossless audio.

In addition to the latest reissuing of Johnston’s material, his estate is also planning on releasing even more material. Going into 2024, the estate has promised the companion piece, Daniel Johnston in the 21st Century, which will restore all of the albums the singer had worked on up until his death in 2019.

Outside of his studio material, 2025 will also see a release of various outtakes from his album sessions as well, featuring alternate takes of his classic material. The Bandcamp link also features a “Pay What You Want” policy as well, with all the proceeds going to Johnston’s estate.

While Johnston’s music didn’t hit the mainstream, many of the biggest names of alternative music were proud to call themselves fans. Among Johnston’s listeners included members of The Flaming Lips and Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, who namechecked his music among his favourite albums of all time.

In the modern age, Johnston’s music is still being held in high esteem, later being covered by everyone from Wilco to Phoebe Bridgers. Listen to Johnston’s music below.
