Daniel Day-Lewis leaves door open to more acting roles following ‘Anemone’

Daniel Day-Lewis has confirmed he hopes to continue acting following the release of Anemone.

The upcoming movie, set for release in UK cinemas on November 7th, is Day-Lewis’ first movie since Phantom Thread in 2017. He co-wrote Anemone with his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, who also directed the film.

For most of the past decade, it has been widely assumed that the Oscar-winner has been retired. However, Day-Lewis is now back doing what he does best, and looking ahead to more roles in the future.

“No, there’s been no inundation. I’m definitely open to the idea of working,” he told the BBC. Day-Lewis also cleared up the retirement talk, sharing, “And just to put the record straight, I never used the word retirement. People have happily used it on my behalf.”

The actor continued, “But I felt I needed to work at something else for a while, which I did. I’m glad to be back doing this, and I’m certainly open to doing it again.”

While Day-Lewis wasn’t consciously looking for his next role, the lure of teaming up with Ronan was too strong to resist, with him saying it was a “very open and unspecific impulse that started it”. He also shared, “I think what happened inadvertently was it also became an exploration about the generations of relationships between fathers and sons.”

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Ronan addressed the elephant in the room, regarding the nepotism that has helped him direct a feature-length movie aged 27 starring a triple Oscar-winner.

The director admitted, “I definitely had reservations at first, given the nepotism aspect of it. But I ended up feeling like, if I hadn’t done this, in 10 years I would look back and think, ‘How did you not take this opportunity to make something with your dad in this way?’”
