Daniel Day-Lewis is “done” with acting

A long-time friend and collaborator of Daniel Day-Lewis has stated the actor has got no intention of making a comeback to the screen.

Jim Sheridan, who made the revelation, previously directed Day-Lewis in My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, and The Boxer. While Martin Scorsese recently outlined his hopes to collaborate with the Academy Award winner, that doesn’t appear to have any legs.

The star’s last appearance came in Phantom Thread, a film released more than six years ago. Since then, Day-Lewis hasn’t looked back and faltered on his word. Although, in a new interview, Sheridan admitted that he’d love to work with Day-Lewis for a fourth time, he conceded that it won’t be happening.

“He says he’s done. I keep talking to him,” Sheridan told Screen Daily. “I’d love to do something with him again. He’s like everybody else. He opens up the streamers and there’s 7,000 choices, none of them are good.”

“Film has been moved out of the public domain into a private domain – you have a remote, you can stop it,” he continued. “It’s not the same experience. It’d be great to see Daniel coming back and doing something because he’s so good.”

Day-Lewis has previously taken extended sabbaticals from acting before which didn’t last forever, but at the moment he’s sticking to his guns to ensure his retirement is permanent.

While he’s not appeared in any recent films, earlier this year, Day-Lewis made a rare public appearance at the National Board of Review Awards, presenting Scorsese with the ‘Best Director’ prize for Killers of the Flower Moon.

In his victory speech, the director remarked: “We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life, maybe there’s time for one more.”
