Dan and Eugene Levy share moving tributes to Catherine O’Hara: “Family”
Dan Levy and his father, Eugene Levy, have paid tribute to long-time collaborator and Hollywood icon, Catherine O’Hara, who passed away on January 30th at the age of 71, following a brief illness.
O’Hara had many roles in beloved television and film favourites, including Schitt’s Creek, Home Alone, Beetlejuice, After Hours, and Heartburn. Her career in the industry began in Toronto, where she met Eugene.
Slightly later in her career, O’Hara starred in the HBO sitcom Schitt’s Creek with Eugene and Dan, a series about a couple who lose all their money and have to settle down in the town of Schitt’s Creek. O’Hara’s performance earned her an Emmy in 2020 for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series’.
Now, Eugene and Dan have paid their respects to their colleague and friend. Dan took to Instagram to share two pictures of the pair. In the caption, he wrote, “What a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for all those years.”
He added, “Having spent over fifty years collaborating with my Dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it. I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her.”
Dan signed off, “My heart goes out to Bo, Matthew, Luke and every member of her big, beautiful family.”
Eugene’s statement was shorter, but no less moving. He wrote, ““Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today. I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years.”
He continued, “From our beginnings on the Second City stage, to SCTV, to the movies we did with Chris Guest, to our six glorious years on ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ I cherished our working relationship, but most of all our friendship. And I will miss her.”
Plenty of other tributes have poured in for the star, led by her fellow The Last of Us actor Pedro Pascal, who described O’Hara as a “genius to be near” and who leaves “less light in my world”.
