Damon Albarn confirms a new Gorillaz album is coming in 2025
Gorillaz are set to release new music in 2025. Damon Albarn has confirmed that a new album will arrive later this year.
It has been two years since Gorillaz offered up new music to their fans, but the wait is almost over. Their 2023 album Cracker Island proved that the people’s love for the iconic British virtual band remains as strong as ever.
However, soon after the release, Albarn was swept up in the monumental Blur comeback of 2023 with their album The Ballad of Darren and a busy summer of festival appearances, touring and two huge shows at Wembley Stadium.
Now, it seems that Albarn’s attention has been switched back to the project he first began in 1998. While speaking to a French publication, Les Inrockuptibles, the musician shared what he’s focussing on right now. At first, he spoke about The Magic Flute II: La Malédiction, his new pop opera sequel to Mozart’s The Magic Flute. This isn’t Albarn’s first foray into the world of theatre, as he’s worked on several scores, soundtracks, and operas before.
Gorillaz fans will be pleased to know that that isn’t the only thing he’s busy with. “I’m finishing a new Gorillaz album,” he told the magazine, adding, “One opera and one new Gorillaz album seems like enough for 2025! Unless someone accuses me of taking my foot off the gas!”
Though Gorillaz has always been a collective, Albarn stands as the only consistent musical member of the group, spearheading the project alongside artist Jamie Hewlett, who designed the fictional characters that represent the group.
Each time the music evolves, so too do the artwork and the group’s approach to presenting themselves at their live shows. Therefore, when the suggestion is made that new music is coming and the band is preparing for a big return, excitement immediately builds as it begs the question of what this next chapter for the virtual group will look like.
