Dakota Johnson says “drastic changes” were made to ‘Madame Web’ script

Madame Web star Dakota Johnson has claimed the finalised script for the comic book adaptation had “drastic changes” from the one that convinced her to accept the role.

The superhero origin story, directed by S.J. Clarkson, also stars Sydney Sweeney opposite Johnson. In the film, Johnson plays a paramedic working in New York City, who realises she is able to see into the future. In light of this life changing revelation, the character forges a relationship with three young women who are set for bright futures if they can face the challenges presented to them.

However, shooting the film was complicated for Johnson, who told The Wrap of the extensive rewrites: “There were drastic changes. And I can’t even tell you what they were.”

Nevertheless, Johnson soldiered on through production despite the script undergoing such heavy reworking, and she’s grateful for having her director to lean on.

Titular character Cassandra Webb’s clairvoyant superpowers necessitated several scenes being shot two or three times with subtle differences to outline the protagonist’s ability to potentially change the future.

As a result, Johnson occasionally found herself struggling to keep track of what was going on, with Clarkson happy to lend an assist. “Yes, I did get very lost and S.J. always knew exactly where we were, which was really incredible,” she admitted.

Meanwhile, Johnson recently hit out at Hollywood, labelling the whole industry as “boring” and “bleak”.

The Madame Web star confessed: “The people who run streaming platforms don’t trust creative people or artists to know what’s going to work, and that is just going to make us implode.”

Madame Web is available to watch in cinemas now, watch the trailer below.
