Craig Brewer sheds light on Snoop Dogg biopic: “I’m being pretty bold”

In an exclusive interview with Far Out, American filmmaker Craig Brewer has shed light on the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic.

In June 2025, it was announced that Brewer, the director behind Hustle and Flow and Coming 2 America, will direct the biopic, with Jonathan Daviss set to play the iconic figure. Daviss is best known for his role in the action-adventure Netflix series Outer Banks.

Now, chatting exclusively with Far Out, Brewer has shared more details on exactly what we can expect from the picture.

Brewer’s latest film, Song Sung Blue, took on the real-life story of a Neil Diamond tribute act, played by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. Noting the obvious genre similarity with the upcoming Snoop Dogg film, Brewer compared the two.

While shooting Song Sung Blue, Brewer admitted that he “tried to be a little bit more loose with trusting the actors, trusting my crew.”

However, he noted, “That being said, I’m now working on Snoop, and I’m realising that it’s a different energy than this movie.”

Brewer explained that his 17-year-old daughter and her peers “know who Snoop is, but they don’t know who Snoop really was when Snoop was 18.” As such, the story is much more of a challenge, as many will come to the movie with preconceived notions that Brewer must challenge.

Brewer’s solution is to “go back to my Hustle and Flow roots.” The 2005 movie followed pimp and hustler DJay, played by Terrence Howard, who dreamed of being a respected rapper.

The similarities to Snoop Dogg’s origin story are evident, Brewer revealed: “I mean, [Snoop Dogg] was a rolling crip gang banger in Long Beach, and it is a wild tale how he ultimately became an artist.”

Directorially, Brewer admitted that “I’m being pretty bold with the choices and with the stories. I think we’re gonna really, I wouldn’t say shock people, but we’re definitely going to be going like, ‘Oh, this isn’t a movie about him and Martha Stewart’.”

Snoop has previously shared his excitement for the project. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, he praised Daviss, sharing, “Jonathan is the whole thing, man. He’s a dynamic actor, he’s a great spirit, and he’s a learner. He’s able to take things and make it better.”

Currently, there is no word on an official release date for the biopic.
