Connie Constance has shared her explosive new single, ‘Prim & Propa’, which you need to wrap around your ears immediately.
Constance’s latest effort is the title track from her forthcoming EP, which is dropping later in the year, and it’s a volcanic way of announcing the tantalising release. ‘Prim & Propa’ starts as a jangly nu-folk effort that is reminiscent of Made of Bricks-era Kate Nash as Constance nonchalantly sings, “I’m not prim and propa/ But I’m bopping like a top shotter/ Skint and sober/ And I’m done talking to the devil on my shoulder.”
A mesmerising, pummeling drum then kicks in, and Constance takes the track through the gears as it morphs into a rousing and uplifting anthem that Florence Welch would be proud of. As the song goes on, the lyrics pick up a sense of optimism that elevates ‘Prim & Propa’ into euphoria.
“This song is about owning community culture, family and friendship,” Constance commented. “It’s about looking at that big white house and the perfect grass and saying ‘Yeah, Nah, not for me, mate – not without my people enjoying it with me. It’s an anthem for everyone that feels betrayed and let down by this country.”
She continued: “It’s for the single parents, the people that work their arses off every single day and can barely get their head above water. It’s a reminder that we’ve got what’s important right here with us: ‘When you want more then look around, if you’ve got love you know you’re good / Cause when the grass is greener, the people are meaner.”
Constance has a relatable imitable wit about her lyrics that give ‘Prim & Propa’ an authentic touch, and she fervently delivers every line in a manner that’s impossible to feign.
The buoyant ‘Prim & Propa’ sees Constance radiate a glass half full approach to life that is beguiling and a necessary piece of music to hear if you feel like your chips are down.
