Clint Eastwood claims film industry originality comments were “entirely phoney”

Clint Eastwood has claimed that comments he made in a recent interview about the film industry lacking originality were, indeed, “entirely phoney.”

The Hollywood stalwart purportedly said in an interview with an Austrian outlet called Kurier on May 31st that: “We live in an era of remakes and franchises. I’ve shot sequels three times, but I haven’t been interested in that for a long while. My philosophy is: do something new or stay at home,” but he has now retracted these comments.

In a statement shared to Deadline on June 2nd, Eastwood said: “A couple of items about me have recently shown up in the news. I thought I would set the record straight.”

He continued: “I can confirm I’ve turned 95. I can also confirm that I never gave an interview to an Austrian publication called Kurier, or any other writer in recent weeks, and that the interview is entirely phoney.”

The circumstances around the bizarre, seemingly false story have not yet been made clear. Kurier is a real news outlet in Austria, but with a small readership of only around 100,000, the supposed comments from the veteran actor and director quickly went viral.

One element of the story that did seem to ring true, however, is that Eastwood did indeed turn 95 on May 31st, which was discussed in the dubious interview.

The Kurier article made a further claim that Eastwood is making another film that is now in pre-production, but the revelation that the interview is seemingly fake obviously casts this into doubt.

Eastwood’s last directorial effort was Juror #2, which was released in 2024, while he last appeared on the screen as an actor in Cry Macho, which came out three years ago.
