The classic rock band with the best songs to drink alcohol to, according to science

Every genre of music has an associated drink pairing that it just matches perfectly with. For rock, you’d go with something strong like beer. Wine is obviously best paired with soul, or the most heart-wrenching break-up ballads. Pop would probably go best with something fizzy, like a vodka and lemonade. But whatever your drink or music of choice may be, there’s no denying that the two come together in a combination to suit every mood.

But when it comes to creating a peak drinking playlist to suit a party occasion, it can admittedly be almost impossible to strike the right tone. Do you want something romantic? Electric? Floor-filling? The options and possibilities are so endless that it’s hard to know even where to begin when choosing a soundtrack that will please your likely very critical audience. But luckily, there’s one universally adored band who have got you covered.

Indeed, you don’t just have to take the layman’s word for it, because a scientific study has indeed proven that there is one definitive rock band whose songs are the best to drink to, and the answer is hardly surprising when you come to think of it. So, the next time a night full of booze and banter is heading your way, stick on a bit of AC/DC to win over the masses – because they are the one rock outfit whose songs are best suited to drinking, studies have shown.

This all spiralled, naturally, from a whisky company last year that set out on a search to find the best rock band to listen to while having a drink. The results were overwhelmingly conclusive, to say the least. Combining through over 23,400 drinking playlists on Spotify and then sorting all the songs into their corresponding genre, AC/DC appeared as the clear frontrunners in the rock fraternity, with their tunes making up four of the top ten.

So what are the ultimate AC/DC drinking anthems, I hear you cry? ‘Thunderstruck’ was the absolute leader of the pack, appearing on no less than 521 of the sample playlists, closely followed by ‘Highway to Hell’, of course, which made its way into the drinking playlists on 477 separate occasions.

But not complete with a double bill of the Australian rockers, two more classic songs also made their way into the top rankings, ready to turn your night from a party into what is truly an evening for the rock and roll ages. Throw in a bit of ‘Back in Black’ for a good dose of head-banging, and follow it up afterwards with ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’, and, well, you’re bound to be a bit fuzzy the next morning.

No doubt AC/DC themselves are delighted with the honour of being the ultimate drinking rock band, because although music can be an insular process of finding oneself or expressing your deepest emotions, the real motive for groups like these is sharing it with the fans, and having a wild night while you’re at it. Perhaps the only inadvisable thing is maybe not to have AC/DC on for the entire length of time you’re drinking, because otherwise, you might not remember anything at all.
