City official denies Fyre Festival 2 is taking place in Playa del Carmen
An official for Playa del Carmen in Mexico has denied Billy McFarland’s claims that Fyre Festival 2 is set to take place in the region.
Initially, Fyre Festival 2 was announced to take place in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, between May 30th and June 2nd, 2025. However, plans later changed with Playa del Carmen being announced as the new location for the event last month.
On March 28th, McFarland hosted a press conference for Fyre Festival 2 along with local officials, the event was streamed on social media.
In his opening statement, McFarland said: “I’d like to thank all of my partners for making this happen. We have a few sitting here on stage. … I’d also like to thank the special guests in the audience. We have special representatives from the Secretary of Tourism, Secretary of Economy, the Secretary of Security and Civil Protection.”
McFarland continued: “Our relationships with Playa may be new, but I know I speak for the rest of the team when I say we couldn’t ask for a better group of people.”
However, on April 3rd, the Playa del Carmen government issued a statement on social media in Spanish, which translated into English, reads, “In light of rumours about an event called ‘Fyre 2’, we inform you that no event with that name will be held in Playa del Carmen. After a responsible review, there is no registration or planning in the municipality.”
It continued, “This government acts with responsibility and commitment to safety, public order, and social coexistence.” It also stated that “institutional channels” would be used for any further information on the subject.
With less than two months to go until Fyre Festival 2 is set to take place, the official line-up is still yet to be announced. On March 30th, McFarland shared in a social media video that they would begin to release names “this week” but no artists have yet been revealed.
