Christopher Nolan shares first look at ‘The Odyssey’ and UK release date
Universal Pictures has released the first look at Christopher Nolan‘s huge undertaking, The Odyssey, in the form of a poster, less than 24 hours after the teaser trailer leaked online.
The teaser trailer for Nolan’s The Odyssey emerged online on July 1st, after it aired before official cinematic screenings of Jurassic World: Rebirth. Nolan prefers his trailers as pieces of cinematic experience, so no online release date was announced for the teaser trailer. However, in reaction to the leak, Nolan has provided fans a first look via the new official image.
The poster depicts a dark, stormy background; at the bottom of the image, the upturned face of an ancient statue is captured. Sparks of red embers around the statue suggest it is on fire, or at least surrounded by an inferno. Above, in red lettering, reads “Defy the Gods.” It also reveals the official release date, already leaked in the teaser trailer: July 17th, 2026.
The leaked teaser trailer depicts much more than the new poster. It shows the Interstellar director leading into a darker, brooding tone, visualised by a stormy sky and dark sea. A narrator adds, “Darkness. Zeus’s law smashed to pieces. I’m without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, he won it.”
It also stars Tom Holland in the role of Odysseus’s son Telemachus, conversing with an unknown character, played by Jon Bernthal. The clip then cuts to footage of a man floating on driftwood in the middle of the sea. This appears to be the eponymous Odysseus, played by acting royalty Matt Damon, though the viewer is not afforded a clear view of him.
Alongside Holland and Damon, Nolan has lined up an impressive cast for the epic. Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie and Elliot Page will all feature.
