Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas to receive royal honours for outstanding contribution to film

For their outstanding contributions to the film industry, both Christopher Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas Nolan, are to receive a knighthood and damehood.

The announcement follows over two decades of Nolan and Thomas working in the film industry. Ever since making his debut film Following, Nolan became known for extensively working with his wife on all his projects, first meeting each other at university before marrying in 1997.

After working on films such as Memento, Nolan began producing various intense dramas, including the magician-focused film The Prestige as well as Insomnia, starring Robin Williams. From there, Nolan continued to hone his craft in various dramas, including space-travel explorations in Interstellar and the wartime drama Dunkirk.

A collection of Nolan’s most high-profile films came from his work on his Batman trilogy. Reimagining the Caped Crusader from the previous George Clooney adaptation, Nolan’s work on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises became major entries in the superhero movie franchise canon, including Heath Ledger winning a posthumous ‘Best Supporting Actor’ award for his role as The Joker. The movies arguably began the boom of superhero blockbusters.

His latest film, Oppenheimer, sought to tell the story of the man behind the construction of the atomic bomb. The film starred Cillian Murphy in the titular role, the first lead role he had in a Nolan film after playing various side characters in The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk.

The movie would win big at the Oscars 2024 and provide Nolan with his coveted ‘Best Director’ award before he and his wife, Emma Thomas, took to the stage that same evening to pick up the Oscar for ‘Best Picture’. The film also won awards for ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Supporting Actor’, picking up seven awards in total.

Nolan also joins a list of many directors who have received such a prestigious honour. Filmmakers such as Roger Deakins and Ridley Scott have received honours in the past, and most recently, Steve McQueen was given the prestigious title for his recent work on the big screen.

As of yet, there has been no word on whether Nolan is working on any new projects.
