Christopher Lee names the greatest actor “no one can touch”

There are actors with an expansive repertoire and acting prowess, and then there’s Johnny Depp. Depp effortlessly seems to fit every role he undertakes, adding his unique flair and finesse. Whether playing eccentric characters like Edward Scissorhands or Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, embodying the drunken swagger of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, or portraying the notorious John Dillinger in Public Enemies, Depp consistently delivers distinctive, inimitable performances. His signature style leaves an indelible mark on each role, creating something only he can bring to life.

Very few can truly compare to him in the realm of acting. That’s the unique thing about Depp—there isn’t a barometer for comparison. He stands apart from his contemporaries, defined by the eccentric and esoteric way he approaches roles, setting himself apart from other actors of his generation.

Depp has his trademark panache and ingenuity, and watching him act is like watching a performance of one of your favourite bands at your favourite venue, a once-in-a-lifetime show – Pink Floyd at Pompeii or Radiohead at Glastonbury, take your pick, but watching Depp evokes feelings just like when the main riff and chorus kicks in at the gig (insert Jack Sparrow dance).

Going back to May 1st, 2005, the late Christopher Lee, fresh off his stint as Saruman in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, reserved high praise for Depp. Speaking to Total Film, Lee asserted: “With Johnny Depp, yes. Who, as far as I’m concerned, is number one. Of his generation, there’s no one who can touch him. Some performers today, it’s like looking at holes in the air. You get these young, over-hyped stars with very little experience pitched into big-budget movies in major roles, and they can’t begin to handle them.”

This high praise coming from Christopher Lee, who in his own right had an extensive catalogue of films under his belt, commands a certain authority — it’s largely apparent that he knew what Depp was capable of and the stunning performances he’s produced as an actor across his entire filmography are testament to that.

Depp, for over two decades, has remained an outlier compared to actors of his era, with a certain kind of on-screen persona that only he can create. While many of his roles have been brought to life by his eccentric acting style, Depp’s authentic portrayals of those characters couldn’t be envisioned to be played by anyone the way he played them.

While his personal life has seen severe turmoil over the years, it perhaps slightly taints the boldness, uniqueness and resplendent nature of his work. The only thing missing for Depp is that elusive holy grail of an Academy Award. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that Depp is a once-in-a-generation actor, a sentiment echoed not just by Lee but by a host of professionals in the industry, including Quentin Tarantino.

The irony is that the world perhaps wouldn’t have seen these staggering performances had Depp found success in music, considering he left his schooling to start a band and pursue musical endeavours. But wherever his career leads from this point, it’s essential to pause and reflect for a while that audiences have got to watch the brilliance of Johnny Depp shine on the big screen.
