Chris Hemsworth reveals why Kevin Costner wouldn’t cast him
Chris Hemsworth might have started as an Australian soap star, but he’s now one of Hollywood’s most prominent leading men, best known for his role as Thor.
The early years of his career were spent appearing in the odd episode of various television shows before landing a regular spot in Home and Away. He left the show in 2007, and within a few years, he’d made it to Hollywood, with Star Trek becoming his feature film debut.
Before he knew it, Hemsworth became Thor, a role he’s reprised many times in the self-titled franchise, as well as in the Avengers movie series. The Australian is now one of the highest-paid actors in the world, thanks to his leading performances in films that continually smash the box office, yet despite his fame, like many actors, he can’t just land any part he so wishes.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hemsworth revealed that there was a role he really wanted, but he lost out to Kevin Costner – who was also set to direct the film.
Costner is a prolific actor, but he has also won two Academy Awards for his filmmaking abilities, taking home ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Picture’ for Dances With Wolves in 1991.
Hemsworth has been keen to work with Costner for a while, but it appears that the filmmaker is hardly desperate to cast him in any of his work. “There was a movie, a script that I’d read and loved and was like, ‘I want to get that,’ Hemsworth said.
“I’d love [to have] him as a director,” he continued. “I was like, ‘Goddamnit!’ [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ Didn’t work. I didn’t get the part.”
Although Hemsworth was disappointed that he missed out, he admitted that the film is “better seen in [Costner’s] wheelhouse for sure, as far as the kind of Western environment.” He elucidated, “There’s horses involved, he’s a horse wrangler, and my wife read it and loves horses.”
Costner has been adamant that he’ll still perform parts if he fits the bill, telling Entertainment Tonight that “as long as I’m still young enough to play it, I’ll play it.” He added, “Chris will have to wait his turn,” although he admitted that Hemsworth is “certainly one of our great leading men right now.”
