Chris Columbus tied to new ‘Gremlins 3’ film

A new Gremlins movie is coming. Reports suggest that original scriptwriter Chris Columbus has already written the screenplay and is in line to direct the project.

The iconic American filmmaker Steven Spielberg produced the first movie. The original script was penned by Chris Columbus, who would later go on to write The Goonies. Horror director Joe Dante headed up the film, which follows a young man who mistakenly breaks three important rules concerning his new fantastical pet bought by his father in Chinatown.

Word of the new addition to the universe came originally from Zach Galligan, the star of the first movie. He said that Warner Bros Pictures wanted to move forward with a third Gremlins film. The script is apparently finished and waiting for Steven Spielberg’s seal of approval.

According to a new report from TheInSneider, the script was penned by none other than Chis Columbus, the mastermind behind the very first movie. If this is the case, fans can except an even darker follow-up, as Columbus has noted his key influences in writing the terrifying creatures were classic Universal monster films, such as The Mummy, The Invisible Man and Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The universe has Quentin Tarantino’s seal of approval. He once reflected on the second movie, which came out in 1990, and commented, “I think Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a fucking masterpiece. The greatest MAD magazine ever put into a film.”

This may not be the only announcement from the film company. Reportedly, a slate of new projects is forthcoming, as Warner Bros Discovery will soon divide into two separate companies: Warner Bros and Discovery Global.

Since Gremlins, Columbus has directed many adored films, such as 1990’s Home Alone, 2001’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and 1993’s Mrs Doubtfire.

The new project is said to use puppetry, not CGI, despite recent technological advancements. An announcement with official dates is expected soon.
