Chris Brown granted £5 million bail over alleged bottle attack
R&B singer Chris Brown has successfully been granted bail following his arrest last week in Manchester after putting up £5 million.
Brown was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent in Manchester last week, relating to an alleged attack in a London nightclub in 2023. He is accused of attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a bottle at the Tape nightclub on February 19th, 2023.
In a previous hearing in Manchester Magistrates’ Court on May 16th, Brown was denied bail with prosecutor Hannah Nicholls alleging Brown had committed “an unprovoked attack with a weapon in a nightclub full of people”.
Since then, Brown has remained in custody in Salford. However, on May 21st, a judge granted bail if he immediately puts up £4 million and an additional £1 million within seven days. Brown wasn’t present for the bail hearing and is yet to enter a plea.
Brown’s next court appearance was due to be a trial preparation hearing on June 13th, but that has now been pushed back to June 20th because of his tour commitments.
His European tour is set to begin on June 8th in Amsterdam, it will also see him visit Hamburg and Frankfurt before the UK leg begins in Manchester on June 15th. Brown’s tour will stop by at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Glasgow’s Hampden Park and Birmingham’s Villa Park while in the UK.
The Grammy-winning singer has been ordered to surrender his passport unless he’s touring, and reside at a specific address known to the court. He’s also banned from contacting Diaw or visiting Tape nightclub in London, where the alleged attack occurred.
Brown was arrested at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester at 2am on May 15th, after arriving in the city on a private jet earlier the day before.
Brown is yet to comment on his arrest.
