Chris Brown charged over alleged bottle attack in London
Singer Chris Brown has been officially charged with grievous bodily harm with intent after being arrested in Manchester, the Metropolitan Police have revealed.
The charge relates to an alleged assault which took place at a nightclub in central London on February 19th, 2023.
On May 15th, the ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’ singer was arrested at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester at 2am, after arriving in the city on a private jet earlier the day before. He remains in police custody and is due to appear before Manchester Magistrates Court on May 16th.
“We have authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Chris Brown with one count of grievous bodily harm, contrary to section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861”, said Adele Kelly, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North.
Kelly also added that “criminal proceedings against this defendant are active” and “he has the right to a fair trial”.
Brown was set to begin a large tour on June 8th in Amsterdam. He was then scheduled to go on to play two nights at Manchester’s Co-Op Live arena on June 15th and 16th, and return to the huge stadium on June 24th and July 3rd.
Brown is also set to play the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Glasgow’s Hampden Park and Birmingham’s Villa Park. It is unknown whether these dates will still go ahead.
The alleged attack the singer has been charged with was made against music producer Abe Diaw at Tape nightclub. The court documents of the attack alleged he suffered “severe and lasting injuries” after being beaten “over the head.”
Brown was on a worldwide tour during the 2023 attack. He was playing in the UK on the night in question. Diaw launched a civil claim against Brown for $16 million in damages for injuries and losses suffered as a result of the alleged attack.
Brown is yet to comment on his arrest.
