Charlize Theron is “heartbroken” that she won’t return for ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ prequel

Charlize Theron has been discussing the recent news that she will not reappear for the forthcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel.

Theron, who played the role of Imperator Furiosa in the hugely successful 2015 original film, has been overlooked for the upcoming prequel which will focus and be centred around Furiosa’s earlier years.

Instead of turning to Theron, director George Miller is opting to cast a younger actress for the role. While few details of the specific recasting plans have been detailed, it is rumoured that The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy is a lead candidate to take on the job.

Reflecting on the plans, Theron sat down with The Hollywood Reporter and described her omission as “a tough one to swallow” but admitted that director Miller was the “master” when it comes to Mad Max.

“Yeah, it’s a little heartbreaking, for sure,” Theron said in the interview. “I really love that character, and I’m so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly.

“Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if [Miller] feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner,” Theron added. “I feel like storytelling, on many levels, is really pushing the envelope. We’re seeing shows like Chernobyl, a quintessential Russian story, and you have British actors playing all of these historical Russian characters. There’s something refreshing about it; the emotional impact of the story isn’t lost… We get so hung up on the smaller details that we forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we’re focusing on.”

While Theron missed out on a return to Mad Max, the South African actor is still very much a major player in the world of drama cinema and is on the promo tour in support of her new film The Old Guard which has seen her team up with filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood for the project.

“A lot of women don’t get a second chance, but when men make these movies and fail miserably, they get chance after chance after chance to go and explore that again,” she said of being handed the role in the new film. “That doesn’t necessarily happen for women.

“It’s unfortunate that we feel like the opportunity will be taken away from us in a heartbeat if we don’t succeed, but that is the truth,” she added. “It’s not a very forgiving genre when it comes to women.”

The Old Guard is due to premiere on Netflix this week.
