Charli XCX admits “I’m in the worst place mentally that I’ve been in my life”

Charli XCX may seem like the cigarette-smoking it-girl online, but the Essex-born singer has newly admitted that her mental health is in “the worst place in my life”.

Earlier this month, the singer announced her follow-up to the 2024 hit record Brat, featuring a star-studded cover of John Cale, Marc Jacobs, and Martin Scorsese.

Not to mention her feature-length soundtrack for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation featuring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, Charli XCX has been busier than any other popstar on the circuit.

This might be an incredible creative achievement, but the star has faced much backlash for recent releases, such as Music, Fashion, Film‘s first single, ‘Rock Music’.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Charli has admitted that the unending backlash has led her down an unfortunate mental path.

She admitted, “I recently have been really struggling with my mental health to the point where, if I’m being real, I’m in the worst place mentally that I’ve been in my life.”

The star has attempted to leave the digital world behind as a means to separate herself from the criticism. “I have actually been a lot more offline,” she revealed.

The ‘Apple’ singer added, “I don’t really look as much anymore. It’s just better for my brain. I know people probably won’t believe me, because I am inherently, at least in the past, a very online artist.”

Charli also added that she is a “big believer” in therapy, though she needs to be better at going more consistently.

Taking much of the interview from a Hollywood cemetery, the singer-songwriter appears caught up in questions of mortality. She admitted, “I’m of this mindset at the moment that my life will end, as will all of our lives.”

She added encouragingly, “I want to live my life exactly the way that I want to live it, because I don’t get a redo.”

In a follow-up interview after these initial comments, Charli admits that she has been seeking advice from the 1975’s frontman, Matty Healy, who “was being… helpful in his way.” Charli’s husband, George Daniels, plays drums in the iconic indie band.

Charli concluded, “I am finding it tough to … I don’t know,” she says. “I’m finding my emotions are very, very volatile at the minute, I’ll be honest.”

Charli’s new album is set for release on July 24th. From there, she will have a period of rest before her North American tour kicks off in September.
