Channing Tatum explains why ’23 Jump Street’ is unlikely to happen

Channing Tatum has revealed he doesn’t believe 23 Jump Street will ever happen.

Tatum first teamed up with Jonah Hill in the buddy-cop comedy in 2012’s 21 Jump Street, which was a huge box office success and secured more than $200 million in sales.

They then followed up on the hit with 22 Jump Street two years later, which was an even greater sensation at the box office with sales of more than $330 million. However, more than a decade later, there’s still no word about another movie in the series.

Now, in a new interview with Variety, Tatum shared, “I get asked more about Jump Street 3 than any other movie on the face of the planet that I’ve ever done.”

He then explained why money is the major obstacle holding back the movie, an obstacle that Tatum thinks is too significant to overcome, adding, “I don’t think it’ll ever happen. The problem is the overhead. It would cost as much as the actual budget of the film — if not more — because of all the producers involved. It’s just too top-heavy. It falls over every time.”

Tatum told the publication that he, Hill, as well as the directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, had agreed to smaller producer fees to make it work, but Neal H Moritz, who also served as a producer, is demanding too much compensation.

“Neal’s price for a producer fee is huge,” Tatum said, before adding, “And to be honest, that’s what’s killing it.”

In 2014, during the Sony leaks, it was revealed that there were plans for a Men in Black crossover with Jump Street, titled MiB23, which never materialised.

Last year, Tatum said it was “the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie” and reiterated his desire to revive the franchise, stating, “I would love to do it with Jonah, and Jonah I know wants to do it.”
