César Awards boss insists Jim Carrey appearance was real amid clone conspiracy theories

The organiser of the César awards has denied that Jim Carrey was replaced with a look-alike at the recent awards ceremony after rumours of his authenticity began circulating online.

On February 26th, the Truman Show actor attended the ceremony surrounded by his family and friends in Paris, where he received the honorary Cesar, which was last awarded to Julia Roberts.

However, speculation boomed online surrounding the authenticity of Carrey’s appearance after drag artist Alexis Stone suggested that he had impersonated Carrey at the event. Stone’s social media post showed images of prosthetics and a wig closely resembling the actor’s look from the ceremony.

Rumours picked up to such a degree that the general delegate of the Cesar Awards, Gregory Caulier, shared a statement with Variety confirming Carrey’s very real attendance.

He wrote, “Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.”

Further attesting to the close-knit group that came to support the actor, he added, “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson, and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again.”

Taking a more personal approach, Caulier wrote, “For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”

In his speech, which accepted the award, succeeding Julia Roberts, Carrey traced his roots back to his “great, great, great, great, great, great-grandfather, Marc-François Carré,” who was born in France, in Saint Malo, adding a personal note to the affair.

Alexis Stone is yet to respond to the recent development.
