Celine Song to take on Julia Roberts’ ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ sequel
Past Lives director Celine Song has reportedly lined up her third project, which is none other than the sequel to rom-com classic My Best Friend’s Wedding, originally starring Julia Roberts.
As reported by Collider, the project appears to be in very early development. Sony is looking to produce the film, with Song as the screenwriter.
Dermot Mulroney, who starred as the love interest in the original, was asked about a sequel. He sparked initial rumours with the nonchalant response, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote”.
My Best Friend’s Wedding is a 1997 romantic comedy starring Roberts, Cameron Diaz, and Mulroney. Roberts stars as a food critic who realises she’s in love with her best friend after he announces his swift engagement to Kimmy, played by Diaz. She spontaneously embarks upon a chaotic plan to sabotage their wedding.
Song’s involvement seems like a great match, as the filmmaker recently made her passion for the romantic-comedy genre known, specialising in the love triangle. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker stated that she believes romantic comedies are not taken seriously due to the “misogyny” of deeming the features “chick flicks”.
Exhibiting her own hopeless romantic tendencies, Song also said, “True love is the only thing that is real. I don’t know why true love is any less real than a Birkin bag or a Maserati. True love has endured throughout time. It’s a thing that is so ancient.”
Song’s next movie is set to hit UK cinemas soon. It follows Lucy (Dakota Johnson) in New York as she is stuck between two lovers—a wealthy man (Pedro Pascal) or her down-and-out former boyfriend (Chris Evans), who is struggling to get by as an aspiring actor-turned-waiter.
Song was previously nominated in the Oscars ‘Best Picture’ category for her directorial debut, Past Lives. The Materialists is only Song’s second movie of her career, for which she also wrote the screenplay, produced the film, and sat in the director’s chair. The movie will hit cinemas on August 16th.
