Cause of death revealed for ‘Cheers’ star George Wendt

Following the death of Cheers actor George Wendt last month, aged 76, it has now been revealed that he passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest as well as a series of underlying health issues.

Wendt was best known for portraying Norm Peterson on the iconic sitcom, but he also appeared in other beloved series such as M*A*S*HTaxi, and Soap. Additionally, his CV boasted minor roles in hit movies including My Bodyguard and Somewhere In Time.

The actor’s death was confirmed by his publicist, Melissa Nathan, on May 26th, who revealed that Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at his home almost a week earlier on May 20th. Wendt was cremated at a service on May 28th.

The following statement was issued on behalf of his family: “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

On June 5th, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed that it was a cardiac arrest which led to his death.

TMZ has since reported that Wendt suffered from a series of underlying health issues, including congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and hypertension. Kidney failure and high cholesterol were also listed as contributing factors.

Notably, Wendt passed away precisely 32 years to the day since Cheers first aired. Reflecting on his role as Norm, he once said of their similarities, “The Norm you see in Cheers has been years in the making. I have some characteristics in common with him besides our fondness for beer. But I think I’m a lot happier than Norm.”

He continued: “I was a beer drinker long before Cheers. When I put a couple of six packs on top of my grocery shopping cart, people are pleased. I tell ‘em I’m taking them home to rehearse.”

Wendt is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett, who he married in 1978, and their three children, Hilary, Joe, and Daniel. He is also survived by his nephew, actor Jason Sudeikis.
