‘Cape Fear’ series from Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese in the works

A TV series reimagining Cape Fear, the two thrillers of the same name from 1962 and 1991, is now in the works, with Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese serving as executive producers.

The show comes from creator Nick Antosca, who is also an executive producer and showrunner. Antosca has previously worked on the series Hannibal and the Hulu true crime anthology The Act.

The Cape Fear series is described as a “tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century” and focuses on a married attorney couple who come into contact with a recently released killer with whom they have a history with.

The original Cape Fear movie of 1962 was based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners and directed by J. Lee Thompson. It featured original storyboards from Alfred Hitchcock and starred Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Polly Bergen.

Then Scorsese remade the film in 1991 with Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, and Jessica Lange. Both films saw the husband’s character as the attorney, but the series will differ and make both of the couple lawyers.

This will be the first-ever collaboration between Scorsese and Spielberg. Spielberg had been working on Cape Fear when his contemporary was on Schindler’s List, and they famously swapped projects.
