British Independent Film Awards 2025: ‘Pillion’ scoops top prize
Pillion was the big winner of the night at the British Independent Film Awards 2025, taking home four prizes, including ‘Best British Independent Film’.
The biker romance drama, which stars Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling, came away with the top award of the night, as well as ‘Best Debut Screenwriter’ for Harry Lighton, and craft awards for ‘Best Costume Design’ and ‘Best Make Up and Hair Design’.
The critical success of Pillion comes as Skarsgård and the film’s creative team recently discussed their process in an interview with Far Out.
As part of this, the actor revealed: “A lot of people were like, ‘Oh, a BDSM, kinky gay biker movie by a first-time filmmaker – was that scary?’. It’s an incredible screenplay. It’s so good.”
Skarsgård added: “And then I had one conversation with Harry Lighton…and he’s extraordinary… I just felt so confident in him and his ability to kind of tell this story in the right way, so I didn’t hesitate for a second.”
Elsewhere at the British Independent Film Awards, held at the Roundhouse in London on November 30th, the prize for ‘Best Director’ went to Akinola Davies Jr for his debut film My Father’s Shadow.
Additionally, the award for ‘Best Screenplay’ was given to writers Tom Basden and Tim Key for their debut feature, The Ballad of Wallis Island.
The same pair also won an acting prize for ‘Best Joint Lead Performance’, while the gongs for ‘Best Lead Performance’ and ‘Best Supporting Performance’ went to Robert Aramayo for I Swear and Jay Lycurgo for Steve, respectively.
In a first for the British Independent Film Awards, the inaugural prize for ‘Cinema of the year’ was given to The Magic Lantern Cinema in Tywyn, Wales.
