Brian Wilson death: Tributes pour in for the Beach Boys frontman
Following the death of beloved Beach Boys musician Brian Wilson, the music world has united in mourning.
His family confirmed the 82-year-old’s death. In a statement posted on social media, his family wrote: “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.”
At present, no cause of death has been revealed for Wilson. However, it was revealed in 2024 that Wilson was suffering from dementia after a conservatorship was filed following the death of his wife, Melinda.
Following the news, tributes flooded in. One of the first to comment on his passing was Margo Price, an American country singer-songwriter who wrote on Instagram, “Sending you all love. I’m so grateful for all the beautiful music and compassion he brought into the world.”
The Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood was among the first to publicly share his grief. He wrote on X, “Oh no Brian Wilson and Sly Stone in one week ~ my world is in mourning.”
Meanwhile, musician Jalen Ngonda wrote on the Instagram post, “RIP to one of the greatest composers in human history.”
Electronic duo Disclosure also added to the post, stating, “Favourite producer & composer of all time. Pushed the boundaries further than anyone had before. Lost for words. We love you Brian. Rest in peace to the greatest.”
American drummer and record producer Ahmir K. Thompson, known professionally as Questlove, shared a lengthy Instagram post expressing his grief at Wilson’s passing. Within the personal musings, he wrote of the musician, “I hate he went thru what he went thru to create this album (also: Smile Outakes in my North Star) but man——without him I dunno how so many that came after felt safe to express a feeling of sadness that most humans would be otherwise ridiculed/punished for.”
Son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono Sean Ono Lennon added on X, “Anyone who really knows me knows how heart broken I am about Brian Wilson passing. Not many people influenced me as much as he did. I feel very lucky that I was able to meet him and spend some time with him. He was always very kind and generous. He was our American Mozart. A one of a kind genius from another world.”
Founding member of the Human League Martyn Ware added his grief to the mix, posting simply on X, “RIP the genius Brian Wilson.”
John Cale, founding member of the American rock band the Velvet Underground, shared the post on X that announced Wilson’s passing, writing, “To me, Brian Wilson was not merely about surf music, rather a true musical genius toiling away at melding POP into startling sophistication. He will he be missed mightily.”
American actor and singer-songwriter Lola Kirke also shared her reaction to the news, beneath a picture of Brian Wilson performing at a keyboard. She finished her post with the words, “I hadn’t listened to The Beach Boys in a couple years when yesterday, in a foul mood driving across the Montana prairie, I put on a playlist I made called “Your Depressed Teenage Self.” Pet Sounds is all over it. Brian Wilson had a direct line to my heart, making me feel less alone, like I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t felt like they weren’t made for their time. Thank you Brian Wilson.”
Stephen Street, best known for his work with the Cranberries, the Smiths and Blur, shared a post on X that read, “One of the greatest Americans to ever live has just passed. Brian Wilson, beyond being perhaps the most talented musician this country has ever produced, you were a creative titan, an innovator. Your perseverance through the jungles of mental health was inspiring.” Adding to the post, he said, “How much joy can one man bring to the world? RIP #BrianWilson.”
Tony Blackburn added his thoughts on X, too. The English disc jockey, singer and television presenter wrote, “So sorry to hear that Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has passed away. So many hits and to me it was the sound of summer. RIP Brian and thanks for the music.”
Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre shared his grief online too, writing, “Rest in peace Brian,” followed by a red heart emoji. He also linked to the Beach Boys song ‘God Only Knows’.
The actor John Cusack, who played Wilson in a biopic, also commented, ”The maestro has passed – the man was a open heart with two legs – with an ear that heard the angels. Quite literally. Love and Mercy for you and yours tonight.”
The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr shared an image of them together along with a warm message from himself and his wife, Barbara Bach, “God bless Brian, peace and love to all the family, peace and love Ringo and Barbara”.
The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards also shared an excerpt from his autobiography, Life, about the power of Wilson’s songwriting as well as the caption, “Rest in Peace, Brian Wilson!”
Bob Dylan took to X to write: “Heard the sad news about Brian today and thought about all the years I’ve been listening to him and admiring his genius. Rest in peace dear Brian.”
Significantly, The Beach Boys’ Al Jardine, who co-founded the group with Wilson, wrote: “Brian Wilson, my friend, my classmate, my football teammate, my Beach Boy bandmate and my brother in spirit, I will always feel blessed that you were in our lives for as long as you were. I think the most comforting thought right now is that you are reunited with Carl and Dennis, singing those beautiful harmonies again. You were a humble giant who always made me laugh and we will celebrate your music forever. Brian, I’ll really miss you…still I have the warmth of the sun within me tonight.”
Additionally, actor Elizabeth Banks, who played his wife Melinda in the biopic Love and Mercy, wrote on Instagram: “My heart is heavy hearing the news of Brian Wilson’s passing. I was blessed to spend a bit of time with Brian and his late wife Melinda, who I played in the film about their life and relationship, Love & Mercy. They were madly in love until the very end, always championing one another despite their private and public struggles. Together again, may they both rest in peace. I’ll be playing God Only Knows for the rest of the day and thinking of their terrific kids whom they adored.”
Many have anticipated Wilson’s death for a while due to his recent public battle with dementia and his longstanding cognitive issues. Wilson himself believed that his heavy usage of psychedelic drugs played a major role in his mental decline. Speaking to The Guardian in 2011, Wilson opened up about the positives and negatives of LSD. At first, my creativity increased more than I could believe. On the downside, it fucked with my brain.” Despite his struggles, Wilson’s legacy is one many greats could only dream of.
