Brian Doherty, the guitarist of Canadian-American rock band Big Wreck, has sadly passed away at the age of 51.

Doherty, who formed Big Wreck with frontman Ian Thornley in the early ’90s, enjoyed multiple hit songs enjoying success in the mainstream rock circuit. The band did eventually split in 2002 before reforming in 2010 to play a series of tour dates.

The band has now confirmed that Doherty battled a long illness with cancer before passing away on Wednesday.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that our brother, Brian Doherty, passed away peacefully yesterday after a prolonged and brave struggle with cancer,” the band confirmed in a statement. “Brian started Big Wreck with Ian in their dorm in Boston and his passing is a profound loss to us all. Our deepest condolences go out to Brian’s family.

“He was a good soul who will be missed by all who knew him personally or through the beautiful music he performed.”

After returning to the studio as a band, Big Wreck are planning to release their new album, But for the Sun, later this year.

RIP.
