Brett Goldstein responds to ‘Ted Lasso’ returning: “We had a funeral”

Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein has responded to the news that the hit Apple TV+ series is set to return for a fourth season and shared his mixed emotions on the comeback.

Despite speculation surrounding a potential fourth season, the third series, which aired in 2023, seemingly brought the show to its natural conclusion. After enjoying an adventure in England, Lasso decided it was the right time to walk away from AFC Richmond and return home to the United States.

Then, last month, during an episode of New Heights with Travis and Jason Kelce, Jason Sudeikis revealed, “I think you can ask it, yeah. That’s what we’re writing, we’re writing season four now. That’s the official word. Ted’s coaching, yeah, a women’s team. So there, that’s it.”

Goldstein, who also writes for the show, is believed to be one of the many who will reprise their roles for the fourth season, which will enter production in July. Hannah Waddingham and Jeremy Swift are also expected to return. However, Phil Dunster, who portrays Jamie Tartt, is not believed to be a regular due to scheduling conflicts.

Since news of Ted Lasso’s impending return was announced last month, Goldstein has kept his silence regarding season four. Now, he has addressed it for the first time during an episode of Wild Card with Rachel Martin.

Goldstein shared his thoughts on the beloved show’s comeback: “I have a friend that I went to university with, and I think about this a lot. He had a cat that died. He loved his cat, and the cat was run over, and they buried the cat, buried it. And he was a child. They buried the cat in the garden, and he lay in bed so sad, so upset and crying, and he prayed and he prayed and he wished. ‘I wish the cat would come back.’”

The British actor continued: “And then the cat did come back, and it turned out the cat they buried wasn’t their cat. And I think about that all the time. And so, I’m like, no wonder this guy is fucked in the head, because he thinks death isn’t real, so of course he’s insane. He’s such a weird guy, cause he thinks he can bring things back from the dead.”

After being directly asked whether he brought Ted Lasso back “from the dead”, Goldstein said, “I guess I’m saying I feel like that kid. Like ‘We buried it…We all cried, we had a funeral. Are you saying we can bring anything back?’ It’s too much power.”

Although Ted Lasso is believed to enter production this summer, there is currently no timeline on when season four will hit screens.
