The day before her 75th birthday, Cher has taken to social media to announce that her own biopic, written by the producers of Mamma Mia!, is in the works. The pop icon revealed that the currently untitled film will be delivered via Universal Pictures.
Cher will sit in the co-producers seat alongside producers Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman. The duo were both instrumental in filming the ABBA musical. “Gary and I are thrilled to be working with Cher again and this time bringing her empowering and true-life odyssey to the big screen,” Craymer declared in a statement. “One cannot help but be drawn to and inspired by Cher’s larger than life talent, fortitude, unique wit, warmth, and vision. Her unparalleled success in music film and tv has inspired generations. We could not be happier to tell her story to cinema audiences.”
The all-star team will also be comprised of scriptwriter Eric Roth. The award-winning writer has most recently adapted Killers of the Flower Moon for Martin Scorsese and co-wrote Dune alongside director Denis Villeneuve.
In her tweet, Cher revealed that in addition to working on Forrest Gump, Roth also co-wrote the 2018 musical A Star Is Born. He has also written for Cher before – he supplied the script for the 1987 thriller Suspect, which starred Cher and Dennis Quaid. Much else about the film remains a mystery, including cast and plot.
Cher first gained fame as half of the husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher in 1965. Their single ‘I Got You Babe’ hit number one on both sides of the Atlantic. Subsequently, the couple launched The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour in 1971.
After the duo split in 1975, Cher continued to score hit after hit. She has since become a disco legend and a prominent proponent of LGBTQIA+ rights.
