Boots Riley confirms film adaption of ‘The Simpsons’ episode on Mr Burns

Boots Riley has confirmed that a spin-off play focusing on The Simpsons character Mr Burns is set for a film adaptation.

Mr Burns, A Post-Electric Play was originally written for the stage by Anne Washburn, and premiered Off-Broadway in 2012. Various versions of the show have been staged in the ensuing years, but now Riley is set to adapt it into a movie.

Speculation around the film adaptation has swirled on social media for some time, with a post from an account called Taysparade on X being made in November last year, which said: “Theater Twitter: I’m here to let you all know that Anne Washburn dropped the announcement that Mr Burns is being developed into a film by Boots Riley.”

Now, Riley has confirmed the news by reposting the aforementioned message, simply adding the words: “This is a true thing.”

No further details about the film are known at this time, aside from the existing plot from the play. It follows a group of six apocalypse survivors who gather together and recreate the famous Simpsons episode ‘Cape Feare’.

The genre of science fiction dark comedy has become Riley’s niche over the years, with his previous directorial efforts in the film world being Sorry To Bother You in 2018 and I Love Boosters, which was released this year.

The latter film is set to have its premiere by opening the SXSW Festival in Texas on March 12th, before it is set to be released in the United States on May 22nd.

I Love Boosters follows a group of shoplifters who attempt to take down a brutal fashion expert, and features an all-star cast including Demi Moore, Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, LaKeith Stanfield, and Will Poulter.

No further details on the casting or release of Riley’s Mr Burns spin-off have yet been revealed.
