Black Rebel Motorcycle Club submit cease and desist letter to US Department of Homeland Security
American rock band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have submitted a cease and desist letter to the US Department of Homeland Security for “improperly” using one of their songs in a promotional video.
Earlier this week, the US governmental department shared a clip which was sound-tracked by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s cover of ‘God’s Gonna Cut You Down’, which the band said was used without their permission.
Taking to Instagram, the rock band wrote: “It has come to our attention that the Department of Homeland Security is improperly using our recording of ‘God’s Gonna Cut You Down’ in your latest propaganda video.”
The strongly-written message continued: “It’s obvious that you don’t respect Copyright Law and Artist Rights any more than you respect Habeas Corpus and Due Process rights, not to mention the separation of Church and State per the US Constitution.”
To make their statement even more clear, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club added: “For the record, we hereby order DHSGOV to cease and desist the use of our recording and demand that you immediately pull down your video.”
They signed off by writing, “Oh, and go f… yourselves.”
Despite Black Rebel Motorcycle Club sending a cease and desist letter, the US Department of Homeland Security are yet to acknowledge the complaint, and their video, as of writing, remains visible on social media.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are set to hit the road later this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 2005 album, Howl. They begin in North America in September, and will arrive in the UK in December, playing venues such as Manchester Academy, Leeds O2 Academy, Rock City in Nottingham and The Troxy in London.
Their last studio album, Wrong Creatures, arrived in 2018.
