The Selhurst band that Shame called “the best band in London”, aka Black Midi, have shared a brand new track ‘Talking Heads’ to show they’re equal to their new moniker. The new song feeds off the band’s swelling creativity and is our Track of the Day.
Having flirted around the South London scene with a certain amount of ambiguity, Black Midi are now finding themselves at the tip of everyone’s tongue. ‘Talking Heads’ the band’s latest release, employs an astonishing amount of creativity as its angular guitar is pushed back like pong by the infectious drum rhythm of Morgan Simpson. All underpinned by the Byrne-like vocals.
Guitarist Geordie Greep told Gigwise “Talking Heads is a calculated intensity, driven by frenzied percussion, bright, vivacious guitar, and fitful vocals, we’ve always tried to make it heavy but danceable, melodic but good rhythms. It is accessible music, there are experimental aspects that we’ve taken from when we went crazy at the beginning, we’ve just reigned it in to make something that is pop music.”
The single will be backed by ‘Crow’s Nest’ to become the first double A-side release on the band’s new label Rough Trade Records. It’s due for release on May 17th and should go on to form part of your future collection.
Shame’s claim could have easily haunted a band like Black Midi, it could’ve swamped them in a cloud of hype never to be seen again – but they’re so much better than that. Added to their creativity and impossible energy in songwriting, their live show is quite possibly their crowning achievement. – Check out tour dates below.
A powerful momentum is driving behind Black Midi and blaring the horns but the truth is; they’re the one’s behind the wheel. Listen to Black Midi’s ‘Talking Heads’ below
