Black Country, New Road share acoustic version of 'Track X'

Black Country, New Road - 'Track X (The Guest)
7

London experimental rock collective Black Country, New Road have released a paired-back version of their song ‘Track X’, now with the parenthetical ‘The Guest’.

The original, which bubbles with horn lines, loopy guitar lines, and cooing backing vocals, is stripped of nearly all its parts on ‘The Guest’ version. The intricate guitar lines are replaced with folky strums of acoustic guitar, and the one glossy piece of accompaniment comes in the form of a single pedal tone from a keyboard of indistinct origin. The only holdover is singer Isaac Wood’s rich baritone, which lives somewhere in the nebulous in-between spaces of Matt Berninger, Johnny Cash, and Morrissey. His voice is much more pained and twangy, and the sparseness of the arrangement comes in stark contrast to the band’s occasionally maximalist tendencies.

“This version is where the lyrics for ‘Track X’ originally came from,” Wood explains. “It’s an old story, with some simple guitar playing and has the extra lyrics in the chorus. It’s ‘The Guest’ version, written about two years ago in this format and we thought it would make for a good accomplice to the album.”

That album, For The First Time, has received praise for its ambitious deconstruction of traditional rock and roll. It’s a dense effort, one that I will admit to not particularly enjoying, but I can understand if I am in the minority. It certainly is a singular effort from a wholly unique group of musicians, one that reveals new facets every time you put it on. I just don’t know if it’s good, per say.

But then again I’m just some goofy-ass music critic. I did enjoy ‘Track X (The Guest)’ though. Check out the new version, plus some upcoming tour dates for the band, down below.
