Billie Joe Armstrong to front supergroup honouring Ramones

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Blink-182’s Travis Barker are set to form a supergroup, Cretin Family, to honour the Ramones at an upcoming 50th anniversary celebration.

The group has formed just in time for the Official Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute event, which will be held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles on 30 August.

Fans in attendance at the event will witness the first-ever performance of Cretin Family, comprised of the Green Day vocalist, Barker, Rancid singer and guitarist Tim Armstrong, and Ramones bassist CJ Ramone.

“The spirit of the Ramones is alive in every backyard punk show, punk club, and festival,” Armstrong shared in an official statement

“Generation after generation of cretins and weirdos become Ramones lovers. Kids are influenced by the Ramones, and they don’t even know it yet. ¡Viva Ramones!”

Barker also noted, “The Ramones are the blueprint. Punk rock wouldn’t be what it is today without them. I’m honored to celebrate 50 years of one of the greatest bands ever!!!”

While Tim noted, “From the moment I first heard the Ramones, music was never the same. They are my favourite band of all time! I can’t wait to play those great and perfect Ramones songs with my friends CJ, Travis and Billie. It’s gonna be wild!”

At the event, John Travolta will also present his debut film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach, and a 50th-anniversary screening of the cult 1976 movie Carrie.

“Two years ago, I had the pleasure of experiencing the Hollywood Forever Johnny Ramone Tribute for the first time,” Travolta shared in his own statement.

He continued, “It was a blast, and I want to return again for the Ramones tribute! With showing something new, my directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach. And something old, the 50th anniversary of the original Carrie. It is going to be a fun night. See you there!”

The 50th anniversary of the Ramones’ debut album is garnering many tributes far and wide. The Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas also just opened an exhibition on the iconic band, while Rhino Records is planning several reissues of the LP.
