Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs star in dark trailer for remake of classic movie
The first trailer for Rupert Sanders’ take on The Crow has arrived, starring Bill Skarsgård as the titular superhero character and FKA Twigs as the fiancée he seeks to avenge.
The first-look clip shows Skarsgård and Twigs’ characters falling in love, before they’re brutally murdered. A resurrected Skarsgård becomes The Crow in order to avenge his fiancée. “When someone dies, a crow carries their soul to the land of the dead,” a voice states, “But sometimes something so bad happens that the soul cannot rest until you put the wrong things right.”
The film is based on a comic book of the same name, which was first published in 1989. The superhero story was first told on-screen in 1994, when Alex Proyas adapted it into a feature film starring Brandon Lee. While filming, the star was wounded by a prop gun and killed.
Sanders, who has directed the remake, spoke about Lee during a conversation with Vanity Fair, noting that they kept the tragedy “in mind throughout the making of the film.” “Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow,” he stated.
The filmmaker also shared his hopes that Lee would be proud of their efforts to recreate the story, concluding, “His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.”
The movie marks Sanders’ third feature directorial outing. His previous work includes 2012’s Brothers Grimm adaptation Snow White and the Huntsman and 2017’s controversial manga adaptation, Ghost in the Shell.
The Crow will also mark Skarsgård’s third outing in the superhero world, following his appearance on the X-Force team in 2018’s Deadpool 2 and providing his voice to a character in 2021’s Eternals. More recently, Skarsgård made an appearance in the John Wick series as the main villain in John Wick: Chapter 4.
Twigs made her feature film debut in 2019 with Honey Boy, the same year she released her critically acclaimed sophomore record, Magdalene. More recently, Twigs starred in a Calvin Klein advert which was banned by the ASA. Backlash ensued and both Twigs and Calvin Klein spoke out about the ban, which has now been overturned.
The Crow, starring Alexander Skarsgård and FKA Twigs, is set for release on June 7th, 2024. Watch the first trailer below.
