Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna announces ‘Rebel Girl’ book tour

Punk legend Kathleen Hanna has announced a new book tour supporting her memoir, Rebel Girl: My Life As A Feminist Punk. With the book due out on May 14th, 2024, the US tour starts the same day in Brooklyn.

Hanna is best known for her vital role in the Riot Grrrl scene of the 1990s. As the lead singer of Bikini Kill, the band were the voice of the movement with tracks like ‘Rebel Girl’ and ‘Double Dare Ya’. Vocal supporters of feminism and letting women do whatever they want, Hanna and her band shook up the male-oriented punk scene. The same goes for her next band, Le Tigre.

Her new memoir traces Hanna’s life through both bands and her solo efforts, as well as her personal struggles with Lyme Disease and the misogyny she faced in the industry. To celebrate the release, she’s taking the book on tour all around the US throughout May 2024.

This isn’t Hanna’s first time in print. In 1991, Bikini Kill collaborated with Bratmobile to create the feminist zine Riot Grrrl. Becoming the founding text for the movement, the zine covered topics like how to make mosh pits safer for women, political events and feminist issues through a punk rock lens.

Having written for several other magazines and anthologies, as well as creating spoken word pieces for her solo project Julie Ruin, Hanna is no stranger to the written word. Rebel Girl: My Life As A Feminist Punk, however, is the first time her story has been thoroughly told in her words.

The book tour also serves as a charitable drive. A portion of all the ticket sales are being donated to Peace Sisters, a charity that helps fund girls’ education in Togo, Africa.

Similarly, Bikini Kill recently announced a charity show for the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. The concert will take place at the Capitol Theater in Olympia, Washington, on January 27th. As part of the band’s continued interaction with political and social causes, it’s nice to see their engagement with current events endure into today.
