The best-selling Blu-ray of all time

The rise of streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Apple TV has had many positive effects on Hollywood’s film and TV industries. Such services have made movies and shows easier to access and consume for many and released some phenomenal content in this form.

A selection of the best shows of recent times, such as The Boys and The Crown, have been streaming exclusives, and such sites have also become an excellent release option for films and series that might’ve otherwise underperformed at the box office.

At the same time, however, there are definite drawbacks. There are arguments to be made that content being so readily available at home has led to films making less money in cinemas and to DVDs and Blu-rays feeling obsolete for many customers. Several high-profile directors, including Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan, have heavily criticised streaming services for this very reason. Whatever side of the argument one falls on, it is sad to see physical media such as DVD and Blu-ray in decline.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. When studying the figures regarding the highest-selling Blu-rays, most of the films in question are from the last ten years, so evidently plenty of people are still buying them. But what is the best-selling Blu-ray to date?

The answer is none other than Walt Disney Studios’ Frozen, which has sold a staggering 7,789,622 units since its home release in February 2014. And that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

A decade after its initial release, Frozen remains just as much of a pop culture behemoth as ever. Its merchandising is everywhere; several Disney theme parks now have Frozen-themed rides; the Broadway musical adaptation is in its fifth year, and in 2019, the movie became one of the very few Disney animations to receive a theatrically released sequel.

Very few other productions from the 2010s have had such an extensive impact on popular culture, and Frozen is among the most successful films ever released by Disney, which is saying a hell of a lot. It’s also a very good family movie that has deserved its success, which is always nice to see.

Previously, the best-selling Blu-ray was James Cameron’s Avatar. Again, this shouldn’t come as a surprise since it is the highest-grossing film of all time. Frozen eventually knocked Avatar off the top spot, but it remains in second place on the list of best-selling Blu-ray. As for some of the other highest-selling Blu-rays, the list is very much dominated by Disney and franchise films, so once again, there are no surprises!
