BCUC – ‘The Road is Never Easy’ album review: An Afro-psychedelic journey to Soweto
Blending two very disparate genres together is no easy task, having derailed countless different artists over the decades. In defiance of that difficulty, though, Soweto-based outfit BCUC blend a wealth of different influences, from punk aggression to localised African folk and Caribbean rhythms, creating a beautiful menagerie of sound by the name of The Road is Never Easy.
The Skinny: Since their first LP release ten years ago, with Our Truth, Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness – BCUC – have steadily been establishing themselves as a premier voice for expansive sounds that defy borders as adeptly as they defy genre conventions. In many ways, this new record, The Road is Never Easy, is the natural progression of that expansive output, flowing beautifully from folk chanting to adrenaline-fueled Afro-punk in the blink of an eye. In many more ways, though, the record seems to stand entirely in a league of its own.
Inevitably, the problems that come with trying to mash whole worlds together in one song are numerous. Namely, you run the risk of having things muddled, overbearing, or, in some cases, unlistenable. While BCUC’s album certainly couldn’t be described as ‘easy listening’, though, the Soweto outfit manage to expertly evade those all-too-familiar issues, exercising their many years of experience in creating these mind-bending psychedelic melodies.
Perhaps more importantly than the quality of the music itself, though, is the context behind the album and the journey that transcends across the tracklisting. BCUC have always been keen to reflect their roots in Soweto, but this album in particular is unavoidable in its exploration of the history, people, traditions, and problems of the area, going right back to the horrific age of apartheid. On tracks like ‘Amakhamandela’ – ‘Breaking All the Chains’ – for instance, discusses government corruption, wealth inequality, and the lasting effects of colonial domination in Africa.
During a time in history which is inarguably divided, war-torn, and pretty horrific more often than not, those Zulu-language tracks also have a universal power, stretching beyond the confines of the band’s native surroundings and reflecting wider global patterns. To accomplish all of that within one flowing, ever-expanding musical narrative is an incredibly ambitious undertaking, but one which BCUC pulls off with apparent ease.
The Verdict: With The Road is Never Easy, BCUC have not only demonstrated their unparalleled aptitude for fusing countless different styles and eras together, but they have also perfectly captured the defiant, euphoric energy of their live performances, and delivered a stunning psychedelic ode to their Soweto surroundings, too.
