BBC apologises for not responding to previous complaint received about Scott Mills last year
The BBC have issued an apology for not responding to a complaint regarding broadcaster Scott Mills last year.
Mills, who had worked at the broadcasting corporation since 1998 and hosted the flagship Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, was fired over the weekend due to ‘personal conduct’.
It later emerged, via the Mirror, that the DJ’s sacking is linked to a police probe from 2016 in relation to historical sexual offences involving a teenage boy under 16, which was dropped due to a lack of evidence.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed, “In December 2016, the Met began an investigation following a referral from another police force. The investigation related to allegations of serious sexual offences against a teenage boy.”
The force continued, “These were reported to taken place between 1997 and 2000. As part of these enquiries, a man who was in his 40s at the time of the interview, was questioned by police under caution in July 2018.”
The Met stated that the Crown Prosecution Service “determined the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges” before the case was closed in May 2019.
The Telegraph has now reported that the BBC were made aware by former BBC employee Anna Brees of alleged “inappropriate communications” involving Mills and also asked if they were “ever aware of or involved in any related matters”.
Brees also asked if there had been any “formal or informal complaints” about Mills “relating to safeguarding, inappropriate conduct or harassment”.
Her inquiry was allegedly ignored. The BBC told Sky News on March 31st, “We received a press query in 2025 which included limited information. This should have been followed up and we should have asked further questions. We apologise for this and will look into why this did not happen.”
The statement continued, “More broadly, we would always urge anyone who has concerns or information to raise it with us.”
It is not known whether the allegations relate to the same alleged victim as the 2016 police investigation.
Mills is still yet to comment on his firing from the BBC.
