D.C. singer-songwriter Bartees Strange has released a new video for his song ‘Flagey God’, a tune featured on his 2020 debut album Live Forever.
The last time we checked in with Strange he was performing his own version of Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love’. That was a beautiful and intimate reworking of an already gentle song, but if you want to see a prime example of Strange’s range, check out ‘Flagey God’. Or check out all of Live Forever, because it is certainly worth your time.
The video, a moody black and white production with slightly unsettling overtones, plays into the lyrical themes that feature ghosts and deja vu. Strange is one of those guys that doesn’t have to do a lot to be charismatic. For most of the video, he simply sings the song in a few different locations, but the way he looks and sings around you, instead of directly at you, adds to the tension and unease that is pervasive even as the easy funk of ‘Flagey God’ pulses in the background.
Strange has also announced a set of upcoming tour dates in the UK and greater Europe. The tour will take place in November and will see Strange trek through Iceland, Germany, the Netherlands and, of course, England and Scotland.
Based on the hype and coverage he receives in the British press, it’s tempting to call Strange a greater success across the Atlantic than in his home country. He has European connections after all, specifically to England and Germany. But then again he is set to perform a whole host of shows in the US this fall and has performed on American shows like Late Night with Seth Meyers. Maybe we’ll have to duke it out to see which side loves him more.
