Bakar has made his return in euphoric style with the glorious ‘1st Time’ which is the North London singer-songwriter’s first release since his triumphant 2019 EP Will You Be My Yellow?.
The Londoner has been quietly working on new music since his last EP, an effort which ended up spawning the surprise hit ‘Hell N Back’ which featured in a high profile commercial for Arsenal FC x Adidas’ ‘Bruised Banana’ range and has since gone on to be streamed over 100 million times. That last year has seen Bakar throw his phone away, quit social media, living a normal life and focus on living in the moment.
‘1st Time’ is the first glimpse of this new music which is on offer and sees him offer a fawning over a new beau which has the musician head over heels, as he singes “You are, you are / What I’ve been waiting my whole life for“ during one of the verses.
The track, which offers more confirmation about Bakar’s originality which was all over his 2018 debut full-length Badkid, sees him take elements such as rhyme and rhythm from hip-hop blended with indie music as well as his killer voice on top. He also took up production duties on the comeback single alongside longtime collaborator Zach Nahome and ‘1st Time’ is also accompanied by a video directed by Hector Dockrill, a creative who has previously worked with the likes of Jorja Smith, Ray BLK, Ghetts, Skepta and Jordan Max.
‘1st Time’ is a blissful, feel-good anthem that is the sign of a refreshed Bakar coming back from his time away all the better and still delivering his trademark sound. While it is only one new release, there is certainly no indication of the 26-year-old is suffering from any kind of second album syndrome.
