Anya Taylor-Joy reveals loneliness while making ‘Furiosa’

Actor Anya Taylor-Joy is set to star in the new movie in the Mad Max franchise, Furiosa, but has recently revealed that she experienced severe loneliness while making the action film with director George Miller.

The film sees Taylor-Joy play the younger version of Furiosa, played in Fury Road by Charlize Theron. Chris Hemsworth has also joined the cast of the long-running Australian film series as the main antagonist, Dementus.

In an interview with The New York Times, Taylor-Joy admitted, “I’ve never been more alone than making that movie. I don’t want to go too deep into it, but everything that I thought was going to be easy was hard.”

Furthermore, elsewhere in the con Taylor-Joy explained that she felt like performing in Furiosa would eventually take its toll on her, noting, “Like I knew I was going to need the two years that it took for the movie to come out to deal with it.”

When pressed for an answer on exactly what went down on the set of the film, though, the actor refused to go into much detail, merely telling the interviewer, “Talk to me in 20 years.”

It has recently been revealed that Taylor-Joy’s character has very limited dialogue in Furiosa, which comes in at around two and a half hours in runtime, meaning that Taylor-Joy’s performance is mostly physical and silent.

Talking with The Telegraph, Miller explained his decision to limit the amount of talking in the film in favour of high-octane action. “The problem with dialogue is that it tends to slow things down,” the director said, “and film is a medium that’s often best enjoyed at high speed.”

Taylor-Joy admitted that Miller has a “very, very strict idea of what Furiosa’s war face looked like, and that only allowed me my eyes for a large portion of the movie.” According to the actor, months went by without her speaking a single word on set.

Eventually, the silent quality of Furiosa erupted, though, and Taylor-Joy channelled her loneliness, noting, “We’re animals, and there’s a point where somebody just snaps. There’s one scream in that movie, and I am not joking when I tell you that I fought for that scream for three months.”

Still, Taylor-Joy said that she “loves” Miller and was more than happy to help present his vision, even if she had to go through moments of hardship on the set of his new Mad Max film.
