Anthony Hopkins reveals plans to write autobiography

The legendary Welsh actor Anthony Hopkins has revealed his plans to publish an autobiography.

The 86-year-old, famed most for appearances in The Silence of the Lambs and Legends of the Fall, recently revealed that he has been busy laying down some of his critical memories in hopes of publishing a memoir.

The actor described it as a “weird process” in a new interview with People. Despite packing so much into his career over the course of the past seven decades, Hopkins said he has “quite a memory” and has enjoyed committing them to paper.

“I realised how I’m blessed with one thing. Maybe it’s my actor’s brain. I do have quite a memory. I remember days of months in the years,” Hopkins continued.

The autobiography coincides with a documentary on the actor’s life and career, which his wife, Stella Hopkins, is coordinating. Hopkins revealed that his wife has a “carte blanche to [cover] everything” within the film.

People asked Hopkins how close to completion Stella was with the project. In response, he noted that his The Silence of the Lambs co-star Jodie Foster had already been interviewed for the documentary but conceded, “I don’t know. I don’t ask her. It’s quite a lot of film. I don’t know when it’s going to come out.”

Discussing his signature role as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs in more detail, Hopkins remembered being blown away by the script. “I opened it. I sat in the dressing room in the theatre, and I read through the first scene of Lecter,” he recalled, “I said, ‘Is this an offer?’ He said, ‘I’m not sure.’ I said, ‘I’m not going to read anymore because this is one of the best parts I’ve ever read.’”

“I knew how to play the part,” Hopkins added. “I do have an instinct about these roles. I could understand Lecter. I could understand the mystery of the man, the loner, the isolated voice in the dark, the man at the top of the stairs who’s not really there.”
