The latest single from one of our favourite artists Angel Olsen has arrived as y another taster of her upcoming album Whole New Mess which is due for release on August 28th. It’s a beautiful refrain and is easily our Track of the Day.
The wonderfully stripped back release also comes complete with a simple yet touching performance video. It will feature on her new album, the singer’s fifth studio record, which follows up on 2019’s All Mirrors.
Shot at the Masonic Temple in North Carolina by Ashley Connor, the clip sees Olsen face up to the camera and deliver a charged performance. In fact, the video below captures the essence of what makes Angel Olsen one of the brightest lights in the indie world.
While All Mirrors benefitted from a big expansive sound, this track is a return to the soul-bearing melody which runs through everything Olsen does. On ‘Waving, Smiling’, Olsen is open and honest, allowing the audience to read her words across her vocal.
Explaining in a statement about the song, Olsen said for her the song was a clear image, “‘Waving, Smiling’ in my head is the last scene, a slow-motion realization of love not lost but at peace somewhere within myself.
“It’s the bittersweet end of a chapter of my life — it is the final acceptance that despite coming to an end all of that time was not lost or wasted.” When this kind of complexity is maneuvred into a simple, gentle lilt, punctuated by her stunning voice, you know Angel Olsen has nailed it again.
