Damon McMahon of Amen Dunes has opened up about the sexual abuse he suffered as a child.
McMahon’s decision to reveal the details of sexual abuse were made in response to comments he had previously made about women. Back in 2014 he gave an interview in which he said he did not want to collaborate with women, saying that it was “not [his] vibe” before adding: “I just don’t think chemically it’ll work.”
His comments have since been recirculated on social media drawing significant criticism.
No McMahon has decided to respond to that criticism, elaborating on his comments and explaining that he “did not feel comfortable having a woman in the band at that time” before adding the reason was because he says he was sexually abused by “two different adult women” when he was a child.
“I realize without giving context, my answer was not phrased well,” he wrote on social media. “At that time I did not feel it appropriate, nor was I healed enough, to explain my reason in detail.”
He added: “When I finally reached an age where I gained enough courage to begin to acknowledge what happened to me, Amen Dunes became a form of my own therapy. It was the one safe space I had to explore the feelings and the trauma from childhood, and to start to try and reclaim my identity and sexuality as a man.”
